Often the prostate is not thought about until it starts having problems like prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia, (enlargement of the prostate). Prostatitis can occur at any age and enlargement of the prostate is generally found in men over 50 years of age. The prostate lies right below the bladder and surrounds the urethra. Prostatitis is an infection and inflammation of the prostate and there are a few different types. This condition is often caused by bacteria which has infected the urethra or bladder. Or it can start in the prostate and go to the bladder. Tooth abscesses or other infections in the body can also result in bacteria in the blood infecting the prostate. In some cases no bacteria is found. Symptoms can include: fever, pain and swelling in prostate, blood in urine or semen, or urine dribbling can occur. Chronic cases often have no symptoms and are found at an examination. If you are having problems, make an appointment to get checked out by a physician. While waiting to see the Doctor, there are a few things you can do at home for both prostatitis and BPH. Drink lots of water and avoid caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods. Urinate at every urge, don’t hold it. If you are having a hard time urinating, sitting in a very warm bath can help. If that doesn’t work, get to the Dr. immediately. Sitting on a hard surface like a chair or floor in a lotus position can help express material accumulating in the prostate. Try to avoid soft chairs or bikes as much as possible.
Some herbs can also be helpful in helping and protecting the prostate.
