Perimenopause and Menopause

  • 3 min read

Perimenopause is the time leading up to the end of menstruation. It usually starts in our 40’s, some women as early as late 30’s. This stage of life will last usually between 8-10 years before menopause, the time where we go for 12 months without menstruation. The reason for experiencing these many symptoms is the result of declining estrogen. This is a normal part of life and not a disease or illness to be cured. Some issues that we may experience at this time are:

Change in menstrual cycle, either shorter or longer periods heavier or lighter
Hot flashes
Vaginal dryness
Insomnia
Mood swings and depression
PMS symptoms may worsen and increase

The common treatments used to help these symptoms are:
Antidepressants
Birth control pills
Estrogen therapy, (may increase risk of uterine cancer, stroke, heart attack, blood clots, and gallbladder issues)
Gabapentin

While these treatments can ease symptoms, it is possible they can cause or make us vulnerable to other problems.

There are many natural remedies that can help support us during this time in our lives, from specific vitamins, supplements, balance of exercise and rest, eating healthy, and using a variety of different herbs.
Many herbs have years of use in traditional medicine and now science is backing up many of their uses.

RED CLOVER:
Red clover contains isoflavones, which are plant-based compounds that mimic estrogen in the body. This makes it a popular choice for relieving symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. It also may have bone-protective effects.

DONG QUAI:
Dong Quai or Angelica, also can be known as ‘female ginseng’, is a traditional Chinese herb that has been used for centuries to support women’s health. It is believed to help with estrogen levels and also may have mild analgesic (pain relieving) properties and can help with menstrual irregularities.

ASHWAGANDHA:
Ashwagandha is an adaptogen herb known for its ability to help the body manage stress. It may also help alleviate symptoms with mood swings.

SAGE:
Sage contains compounds that may help regulate estrogen levels for managing symptoms of hot flashes and night sweats.

MOTHERWORT:
Motherwort may help with anxiety, irritability and heart palpitations. It can have a calming effect on the nervous system.

BLACK COHOSH:
Black Cohosh is one of the most widely studied herbs for perimenopause and menopause symptom relief. It may help with hot flashes, mood swings and sleep issues.

HORSETAIL:

If you are not able to tolerate one or more of these specific herbs, there are others to try as well. It is important to note that herbs take a while to influence and change the body, it isn’t a quick fix pill. With regular use you should see a difference in around two weeks of use. Results should increase with time of use. As with prescription drugs, different people can have different results. If you are taking prescription medication, it is advisable to have a consult with me before taking, as some herbs may interact with some pharmaceutical drugs. These herbs should not be taken while pregnant or breastfeeding. Try my Meno Relief Tincture blend. It has each of these herbs in the formula. I can also custom make you a blend specific to your body and needs.
